Recently, one of our mentees Aileen had expressed that she did not realize how “overwhelming of a problem homeslessness was until [she] visited URM.”

The Union Rescue Mission (URM) is a homeless shelter, with a mission to empower homeless people to get off the streets and to build their own livelihood by securing themselves in their own homes. 

With her supportive mentor Irene, Aileen, who aspires to be a physician assistant/mental health therapist, was taken aback by the unfortunate situation of homelessness in Los Angeles. 

“It upsets me knowing that the number of people experiencing homelessness only continues to increase,” Aileen says. 

Nevertheless, our young leader was also INSPIRED in her tour at URM by the heroic ways this organization was working to mitigate the homelessness crisis, through its “legal, medical, and mental support.”

Determined to take action and to expand positive support in the community, Aileen and Irene are currently working on a survey to learn more about the needs of the homeless population.
