❗️20 years ago today, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift hit theaters and completely changed car culture for a generation.

Released on June 16, 2006, the third Fast & Furious film introduced millions of fans to Japanese street racing, drift culture, iconic JDM cars, and the neon-lit streets of Tokyo.

At the time, many fans were disappointed that Vin Diesel and Paul Walker were largely absent, and the film became the lowest-grossing entry in the franchise.

Despite that, Tokyo Drift gradually evolved into a cult classic thanks to its unique atmosphere, unforgettable soundtrack, practical drifting sequences, and the introduction of Han Lue, who would later become one of the franchise’s most beloved characters.

The movie also helped push drifting into the mainstream worldwide.

Cars like the Nissan Silvia S15, Nissan 350Z, Mazda RX-7, and the VeilSide Fortune RX-7 became legends among enthusiasts, while the “Tokyo Drift” theme song remains one of the most recognizable automotive movie tracks ever made.

What makes Tokyo Drift even more interesting today is that later Fast & Furious movies were restructured around its timeline, turning what was originally a standalone spin-off into a major part of the franchise’s continuity.

Two decades later, many enthusiasts still consider Tokyo Drift the most authentic car-focused film in the entire Fast & Furious series.
