Everyone assumes the hardest part of having twins is the logistics.

The double night feeds. The two car seats. The diaper changes that never end. The feeding that is literally constant.

And yes. All of that is a lot.

But that’s not the hardest part.
The hardest part is this. 

They are already two completely different people.

Benny and Dash came into this world together and they are nothing alike. Different cries. Different rhythms. Different ways they want to be held. Different things that settle them. Different faces they make when they’re about to lose it.

And sometimes, in the middle of meeting one of them exactly where they are, I am aware that the other one is waiting.

There is no version of this where I am fully present with both simultaneously. I am always choosing, in some small way, who gets me in this moment.

That’s the part nobody prepares you for.

Not the double diapers. Not the sleep deprivation.

The specific ache of loving two people so completely and knowing that loving one, right now, means the other waits.

They are patient with me. I am learning to be patient with myself.
