Gentle parenting gets a bad reputation because people confuse it with permissive parenting.

They are not the same thing.

We have five kids. We have very clear boundaries, very consistent expectations, and a house where “no” means no every single time. What we don’t have is fear as a tool. We don’t threaten. We don’t shame. We don’t punish emotions.

But we absolutely correct behavior.

The goal isn’t to raise kids who never push back. It’s to raise kids who know how to push back respectfully — who understand why the boundary exists, not just that it does.

Thea is seven and a half. Nathan is almost six. Zoe is three and a half. They are each fully themselves, fully opinionated, and fully aware that in this house we treat each other with kindness or we try again.

That didn’t happen by accident. It happened because we held the line every single time (or at least most of the time) while also staying connected to the relationship underneath it.

Gentle parenting is not soft parenting. It’s intentional parenting. There’s a difference.
