The 2025 FCS national championship game delivered one of the most dramatic finishes in tournament history, as No. 2 seed Montana State edged Illinois State 35-34 in the first overtime title game ever contested at the FCS level. 

The Bobcats, coached by Brent Vigen, overcame a late deficit with a resilient fourth-quarter rally before sealing their second national title—and first since 1984—on a walk-off extra point following a clutch fourth-down touchdown pass in overtime, capping a 14-2 season that showcased their physical Big Sky brand of football. 

Illinois State mounted a heroic comeback from 14 points down, forcing the extra period with gutsy plays and special teams, but fell just short in a back-and-forth instant classic that highlighted the depth, passion, and unpredictability of FCS playoff football.
