On February 29, 1928, Zora Neale Hurston graduated from Barnard, becoming our first known African American alumna. Nearly a century later, her brilliant legacy continues to shape our campus.

To honor 100 years of Black students at Barnard, we’re thrilled to announce 11 community-led projects funded by the new Zora Neale Hurston (ZNH) Grant program! From student-produced audio walks through Harlem to immersive jazz dance-theater, these projects will celebrate her enduring impact through 2028.
