Footage showing the birth of a rare Yangtze finless porpoise has been released by the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Wuhan City, central China's Hubei Province.⁣

The calf, which has been named Xiao 26, was born last month on May 22, making it a month old now. It measured about 70cm in length and weighed around 5kg at birth.⁣
⁣
The porpoise is a national first-level protected species, China’s highest protection for wild animals. There are an estimated 1,200 Yangtze finless porpoises in the wild. ⁣
