NHL expansion comes with a hefty price tag 🤑

Commissioner Gary Bettman informed team owners that the league has begun formally exploring opportunities in Texas — specifically Houston and Austin.

We now know that the total investment needed to bring a franchise to either city is $3.5B — the figure Bettman told reporters on Tuesday afternoon.

That figure is well above the $500M Vegas and $650M Seattle paid in recent expansion rounds.

An additional franchise would give the NHL a second presence in the state alongside the Dallas Stars and push the league beyond 32 teams. 

Bettman has long maintained there is room for growth in the U.S., where the NHL currently has 25 teams.
