“Adjusting to life with aphasia has been a long journey for me, especially after my stroke when I was younger. Communication was difficult at first, but over time I learned ways to express myself better. I regularly talk with my parents, which helps me stay confident in daily conversations. I also spent about 6 years in therapy, and I still meet with my reading tutor to keep improving my speech, reading, and understanding.”

What has helped you feel supported and understood with your aphasia?
“When it comes to support, my parents have always been very important to me. They are patient and help me when I struggle to find words or explain things, and that makes me feel understood and supported.”

“Navigating the community is easier when I have support from my mom, especially for things like appointments or situations where communication might be more complicated. At places like stores or medical visits, it helps when people are patient, speak clearly, and give me a little extra time to respond. Small understanding gestures from others make public situations much less stressful.”

What keeps you going and helps you stay positive?
“Staying motivated is very important to me. I work part-time in IT, which helps me stay active and confident in my abilities. I also moved into my own condo about 10 months ago, which was a big step forward for me. I remind myself that we cannot go back and change what happened in the past, but we can always keep moving forward and build a better future.”
