Did you know that the ‘Grandmother of Juneteenth’, Opal Lee, is a sorority sister of Zeta Phi Beta? 💙🤍

In 2016, at the age of 89 years old, Opal Lee(therealopallee) walked from her home in Fort Worth, Texas, to the nation’s capital in Washington DC in an effort to get #Juneteenth named a national holiday.

Lee told NPR that the wait for Juneteenth to become a U.S. holiday had been 155 years, 11 months, and 28 days in the making. While it was only recently recognized at the federal level, Juneteenth had long been established and celebrated within the Black community, particularly in Texas, since the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in the state.
