Political commentator Tucker Carlson made waves after suggesting on his YouTube channel that Americans should consider walking away from their credit card debt.

During a conversation with cybersecurity expert Ryan Montgomery, Carlson challenged the idea that borrowers carry all the moral responsibility in the debt relationship, arguing that lenders — who market credit aggressively to young adults and college students — should face the same scrutiny.

"I think people should stop paying their credit cards," Carlson said. "You have a moral obligation not to send credit card applications to kids in college. So this goes both ways."

Financial advisors caution strongly against that course of action. Missing payments triggers late fees, higher interest rates, and credit bureau reporting.

Prolonged delinquency can lead to account closures, debt collection, and in some cases legal action. A damaged credit score can affect the ability to rent an apartment, finance a car, or qualify for a mortgage.

The comments arrive amid significant stress in the consumer credit market. Americans are carrying $1.25 trillion in total credit card debt as of Q1 2026, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The average interest rate on accounts carrying a balance is approximately 21.5%, per Federal Reserve data. Roughly 111 million people — about 40% of U.S. adults and half of all cardholders — carry a balance from month to month, according to a report from The Century Foundation. The share of credit card balances at least 90 days past due reached 7.1% in Q1 2026, also per the NY Fed.

For anyone dealing with debt, financial professionals recommend exploring hardship programs, debt management plans, or negotiated settlements before stopping payments entirely.
