In separating yourself from the rest and rising above the competition, you must know what you want, where you come from, and who you are. Those who have succeeded in their endeavors understand this deeply, as those who still are pursuing their dreams should.

We all start somewhere. We all once knew nothing. As we learn, we meet opposition. Trusted ones abandon us, maybe even betray us. People we looked up to count us out. We are told what to do instead, shown alternate paths, sold dreams that were never going to be ours. Maybe we get lost or turn around or find ourselves back at the place where we began.

Even when you finally plug your ears and create your own path, with only your shadow as company and footprints as proof of progress, the voice of doubt—that was never yours to begin with—will stay. It will return, always.

But why did you choose such a path in the first place? Why did you take that first step, the one that was made by your own volition, no one else’s?

There are things in this world that only you can see. Only you and you alone. And because you saw it, it was, in that moment, yours. It was already yours, so you followed it.

You took the step because it was always going to be yours. The only thing that will keep you from it is if you cease to take another step.

A message to all, and for my athletes and artists alike. For those who haven’t taken the first step, who have taken a few, or taken many. Any of us, really, seeking to achieve a dream.

Theme of this post is separation—in the visual composition and in my artistic philosophy. These are the perspectives I know that only I have seen, focusing in on the part of the photo that represents my vision.
