Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran has said that the long-standing preference for software, computer science, and MBA degrees is losing its dominance in the evolving global economy. He noted that the earlier phase of globalization had strongly benefited white-collar careers, particularly in IT and management fields, but that trend is now shifting.

He explained that the future job market will place greater importance on practical and vocational trade skills. According to him, professions such as welding, plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry should be viewed as essential and valuable contributors to the economy, rather than being socially undervalued.

Nageswaran also highlighted that advances in artificial intelligence and automation are changing employment patterns. While many routine digital tasks may be affected, he said that hands-on skills requiring physical presence and real-world execution will remain difficult to replace, making trade-based occupations increasingly relevant.
