“I hope to inspire them by being at a level where I can open doors and speak, and advocate for us, as Indigenous people.”

Hailing from Sweetgrass First Nation, Nehiyaw goalkeeper Raymond Fox’s soccer journey began at nine years old when North Battleford’s local tribal council sponsored the fees for his first season.

After playing club and men’s league, Ray advanced to collegiate and semi-pro with various schools and organizations across Canada and the U.S.

During his time with the Huskies, Ray played a foundational role in weaving Indigenous traditions and ceremony into Huskie culture through initiating smudging in the dressing room, helping establish the Huskies reconciliation logo and as an active member of the Huskies Indigenous student-athlete group.

These contributions and more earned Ray a USask Indigenous Achievement Award for leadership, something he says helped him gain confidence in his ability to be a leader, coach and mentor.

Ray is also the founder of the Indigenous Sports Performance Institute (ISPI), an organization that has secured more than $100,000 in grant funding to help Indigenous youth access sport and cultural programming free of charge.

Now head coach of Blue Mountain Community College Men’s Soccer team in Oregon, Ray is an example of what you can achieve through community, hard work, perseverance and an unwavering belief in yourself.
