While most people recognize the value of having a mentor, finding one isn’t an exact science. So, we rounded up three sure-fire tips from the community: 

1. Mentoring doesn’t have to come from a single person, so keep an open mind and network with as many people as possible, says Rashad Issa, PMP, quality and business improvement lead at Baltic Exchange in London. “If you build a strong network, you can get situational mentorship,” he says.

2. Sometimes the best relationships are forged organically, without any official titles or formal introductions. It’s all about building relationships with other project pros you admire. “Some people don’t even know they’re mentors,” says Tyrone Cook, senior project manager, Forbes Project Management in Leiria, Portugal. “It just happens naturally because you made a real career connection with someone.” 

3. Seek out individuals who challenge—and nurture—you. “My mentor is continually encouraging me to push myself out of my comfort zone—but doesn’t make me feel overwhelmed,” says Louise Newman, CAPM, service delivery coordinator at Orion NZ Ltd., Canterbury, New Zealand. “You want a mentor who never makes you feel dumb or annoying, no matter how many questions you ask.”
