Tillman Scholar Spotlight! 🏆 2023 Tillman Scholar Kristin MacDonald was named a 2025-2026 Virginia Commonwealth University Shift Labs Faculty Fellow Awardee for her work advancing care for older adults and supporting the healthcare professionals who serve them.

Through the Virginia Long-Term Care Clinician Network, Kristin helps connect medical directors and clinicians across the Commonwealth, creating opportunities for peer learning, collaboration, and access to the latest evidence-based care. Her research focuses on a simple but powerful idea: when caregivers experience compassion in the workplace, they thrive: and so do the communities they serve.

“My own research seeks to understand how compassion in the workplace benefits direct caregivers, specifically nursing home certified nursing assistants, and I aim to develop testable interventions to decrease turnover among these workers."

From serving as a dietitian and healthcare administrator to mentoring the next generation of health leaders and earning her Ph.D., Kristin continues to embody service beyond self.
