Many technologies developed for space exploration improve life on the ground after a company transforms it into a commercial product. This repurposed tech is called a spinoff.

From cell phone cameras to memory foam pillows, you likely use NASA spinoffs in your everyday life. Since the 1950s, space technology has contributed to many products available to people on Earth.

1. We’ve created an affordable, 3D-printable metal alloy that can withstand the extreme temperatures of spaceflight. Now, it is used in industries like aviation as a durable, affordable material.

2. Robotic assistant systems built to withstand space are being used to guide the design of underwater robots built for the deep sea.

3. We've shared what we learned about growing crops in space with researchers outside NASA to grow crops indoors more efficiently.

4. We sought to make plastics better insulators by infusing them with aerogel, but found that it also made the plastic more durable. Now, companies are finding uses for this plastic in everyday objects, like beverage lids and flowerpots.
