Some marine biologists have proposed that unusual whale sightings may have contributed to a few historical sea monster stories. During mating or social behavior, a male whale's penis can briefly emerge above the water, appearing as a large, flexible, serpentine shape from a distance. Before photography, sailors often relied on sketches and eyewitness accounts, making unfamiliar marine phenomena easier to interpret as mysterious creatures and helping shape maritime folklore.
