Kids ask me a lot about FT technique and how to improve.

Growing up I represented my country, and I played professionally for 6 years. The way i played as a junior and a senior were very different, but FT were always important.

The way i play is aggressive, i am big and strong, but can handle the ball and drive to the basket, i like to play in the post, and i like the contact and physicality. That means i inevitably get fouled.

As a junior i was hyper competitive and aggressive and i would get fouled constantly. Initially i wasn’t a very good FT shooter, and so teams would foul me rather than allow me to score. I would lose my temper a lot from frustration of being hacked , and that would often see me get technical fouls or ejected 😡

I had to learn to control myself, and also be a great FT shooter so they couldn’t keep fouling me.

A big change in my mentality came from an early coach: mentor for me - Nick Nurse , who is currently the Head Coach of the Philadelphia 76’s and was the coach of the Championship team Toronto Rapters.

He said “consistency comes from efficiency” minimise your movement in your FT, keep it simple, and then you can limit the things that make you miss.

That totally changed my entire shooting process, and with about 1000 makes a week, i became s 90% + FT shooter.

I always challenge myself to try and make 95-100 out of 100 in training. That takes a lot of concentration and a lot of repetition.

Here are my tips 👇

1. Take a deep breath
2. Dont make your pre shot routine complicated
3. Make it 2 simple movements
4. As you bounce the ball - bend your knees and hold
5. Hold the ball tightly, cock your wrist back
6. Push smoothly through your action
7. Down - Up should be your only movement/ action
8. In training focus on high reps and dont take longer than 4 seconds in between each rep.
9. Make at least 500 FT a week.
