The Second One Changes Everything When Clark won his first U.S. Open at LACC in 2023, many questioned whether it was a one-off. After a difficult 2025, he heard the criticism. Now, with a second U.S. Open against Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns, Clark believes there is no longer any debate. The second one validates the first. The Crowd Clark expected questions about Oakmont. He did not expect the reaction from the fans at Shinnecock. People cheered when he missed putts, found bunkers, and struggled. He says he had never experienced anything like it outside a Ryder Cup. His response? "I loved silencing the crowd." Rather than letting it affect him, Clark embraced it. Growing up playing multiple sports, he enjoyed competing with everyone against him. Afterward, many New Yorkers apologized, telling him the behavior did not represent everyone. The Turning Point When Sam Burns closed within one shot, Clark knew he had to respond. Instead of laying up on the par-5 16th, he attacked. The result was one of the defining shots of the championship, setting up the birdie that restored control. The Putter Clark traces his putting turnaround to the RBC Heritage, where he switched to a longer, heavier putter. Almost immediately, the eight- and ten-footers started falling. The confidence carried through the Byron Nelson and into Shinnecock, where his putting became the foundation of his victory. Mental Health and Therapy One of the most revealing moments came when Trey asked about therapy. Clark admitted the aftermath of the Oakmont locker room incident was far harder than dealing with a hostile crowd. Working through the embarrassment and public criticism gave him perspective. By the time he arrived at Shinnecock, he felt mentally prepared for anything the tournament could throw at him. The Oakmont Incident Clark does not make excuses. He says it was the worst moment of his career and hopes people can recognize that one mistake should not define a person. With two U.S. Open titles, he believes that chapter is becoming part of a much bigger story. Looking Ahead Clark admits his results outside his two major victories have been inconsistent because his ball-striking slipped in 2025. He has worked extensively with his coach to rebuild that part of his game and believes the improvements are beginning to show.
