#TSRPolitics: A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration’s effort to allow states to ban SNAP recipients from using food benefits to buy items like soda and candy.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved requests from several states to restrict those purchases, arguing that the changes would remove unhealthy foods from the federal assistance program.

However, SNAP recipients in Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and West Virginia sued, claiming the restrictions could make it harder for some people to access foods and drinks they rely on, including those used to help manage certain health conditions.

On Monday, Judge #AmyBermanJackson ruled that the Agriculture Department did not have the legal authority to approve the bans. She wrote that Congress already defines what qualifies as food under SNAP and did not give the agency the power to remove specific items from the program.
