One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned over the last 25 years of leading people is that your team is always watching.

Not when things are easy.

When a deal blows up.

When a customer is upset.

When someone misses a goal.

When a team member makes a costly mistake.

That’s when leadership gets tested.

John Maxwell teaches that when adversity shows up, leaders bring one of two things:

Water or fuel.

I wish I could tell you I’ve always brought water.

I haven’t.

When I was younger, I used to freak out.

Lose my cool.

Get frustrated.

Lash out.

Jump in and try to save the day.

At the time, I thought I was being a strong leader.

Looking back, a lot of that behavior was rooted in fear.

Fear of failure.

Fear of losing money.

Fear of disappointing people.

Fear of things not working out.

What I’ve learned is that fear creates reactions.

Faith creates responses.

When you’re operating from fear, everything feels like a threat.

Your brain goes into protection mode.

You stop listening.

You stop thinking clearly.

You start reacting emotionally.

And usually make the situation worse.

When you’re operating from faith, you can slow down.

Listen.

Ask questions.

Gather facts.

Make sound decisions.

You stop trying to win the moment and start trying to solve the problem.

Over the years I’ve learned that people don’t need a leader who never faces adversity.

They need a leader who stays steady when adversity shows up.

Because how we respond teaches everyone around us how to respond.

As we prepare to officially launch The Brewer Team on June 22nd, that’s one of the commitments I’m making to our team.

We’ll have challenges.

We’ll make mistakes.

We’ll have difficult conversations.

That’s part of growth.

But we’ll face those moments with honesty, accountability, and respect.

We’ll seek truth before blame.

Solutions before excuses.

And whenever possible, we’ll bring water instead of fuel.

I’ve learned that trust isn’t built when everything is going well.

Trust is built when things aren’t going well and people know you’ll still show up with clarity, consistency, and care.
