The 2027 Taiwan invasion debate may have grown out of proportion. Financial Times correspondent Demetri Sevastopulo argues no one has evidence Xi Jinping has a specific date in mind, but 2028 is a different story.

The convergence of two events makes it uniquely dangerous: Xi Jinping begins his fourth term as General Secretary at the end of 2027, and Taiwan holds a presidential election in early 2028. If the DPP wins again, China loses the story it's been telling itself, that Taiwanese people are gradually moving closer to Beijing's position. And if that argument evaporates, Xi may start thinking about his legacy differently.

Nobody knows if he's made a decision. But the conditions are what matter.
