A unique wetland between Grimes and Granger, now under the ownership of Polk County, is open to the public.

Polk County officials celebrated the opening of Brenton Slough, a 1,113-acre wetland park with oak savanna and prairie habitats, in early June. With 52 acres of shallow, slow-moving water that draws a variety of bird species, aquatic life and plants, the system is one of about 15 sloughs in Iowa, according to Polk County.

The slough and other bodies of water on the property are a hub for wildlife, including at least 130 species of bird, according to the county. Notably, the land is home to sandhill cranes, which are rare in Iowa.
