The 987 Cayman S is one of the most underrated platforms Porsche ever made — and building one right is easier than most people think.

1. Find a clean 6MT with the 3.4L flat-six and no IMS bearing horror stories. 2006+ cars got the revised bearing, but always verify service history. Budget $25-32K for a solid starting point.

2. Bolt-on power is where this chassis shines. A quality intake, full header-back exhaust, and a proper tune will wake up that mid-mounted flat-six without touching internals. You're looking at 30-40whp gained for reasonable money.

3. Don't cheap out on suspension. Coilovers matched with the right wheel specs transform the 987 from a great-handling car into something that genuinely embarrasses stuff costing twice as much. Dial in your fitment here — offset and width matter more than brand hype.

4. Wheel choice ties the whole build together. A proper set of three-piece wheels in 19s with staggered widths fills the arches and drops weight where it counts. This is the step that separates a modified Cayman from a built one.
