We were definitely trespassing when we pulled up to this old brick building near the Mississippi River.

Someone we’d met on the bus at the World Cup opener in LA (m_cat09) had told us this was the place to visit if we ever rolled through St. Louis. And with the bus dead in the water, we took her suggestion seriously and traveled over 1000 miles to make it anyway. Her dad did play for the St. Louis Steamers so we figured there was more to this story to uncover.

Yet, with five minutes to go until kickoff, there were no signs of life at the Spanish Society.

We knocked on the front door… no reply. We circled the old brick building timidly, until we saw a stairwell leading to a basement.

The smell of cigarettes, beer, and chorizos hit us right as we walked in. Before we could even react, Donna and Bobby greeted us with a handshake and a hug. They were the only two people there.

After introducing ourselves, they told us they’d show us something that’d cheer us up.

Donna walked over to a little corner of the basement and opened up a wooden door.

Dozens of pictures featuring Spanish Society soccer teams and players dating back to the 1930s filled the room. Mountains of archives, medals, and trophies belonging to some of the best players St. Louis has ever produced. It felt like stumbling into a treasure we were never meant to see.

“That’s Harry,” she said pointing at one of the photos. “He was on the team that beat England at the 1950 World Cup. His son will be here soon.”

Sure enough, just a few minutes later, Harry’s son, Ty, waltzed in.

We watched the game with him while he told us stories about his own playing career. Sharing a locker room with Hugo Sanchez at the SD Sockers, kicking a ball with Pete Rose… stories for days.

Right before we left, a member of the club told us a bit more about Harry.

“He always liked to talk about beating England at the WC. They were beyond underdogs. He used to say none of them thought they could do it, but that that day on the field, it felt like catching lightning in a bottle.”

We’ve been thinking about that ever since…
