A step by step guide to how we built the swimming pool!

I’ve added detail in the caption for each image and video.

I hope it’s helpful - whether you use a pool company so that you know what to expect, or if you’re going to try to do it yourself.

We used a local company called pool_tec_sussex for the main build who were brilliant (not an ad!)

Our wonderful architects zacmonroarchitects helped us work out the exact positioning and created all the drawings.

Do let me know if you have any questions in the comments.

Save if you think you might ever build a pool in the future!

As we’re on a flood plain here, our only option was to build it on the driveway, as it’s the highest point of land.

These original bricks are quite valuable, so we dug them all up individually, and they’re now sitting on pallets waiting to be reused elsewhere!

The internal area of the pool is 16m x 4.3m.

So the hole needed to be more like 17.5m x 6m to accommodate the walls etc.

This is a layer of mesh laid across the bottom to reinforce the concrete that will be poured in for the foundation.

We had a huge concrete mixer truck to pour in the concrete.

Getting it bedded into the mesh is much harder work that it looks!

Key tip is that because the concrete mixers are so huge, you have to make sure that they have good enough access to get onto the property, otherwise they will need to sit in the street and block the traffic while you’re pour.

The pool was built with a double layer of Nadura block, which is an insulated concrete form made of Expanded Polystyrene foam (EPS).

You basically stack them up like Lego bricks. You can use them to build buildings too!

One of the advantages is that they provide brilliant insulation and create structures with really high thermal performance.

As this is an outdoor heated pool, we need to retain heat as much as possible to keep our energy use as low as possible.

You put steel reinforcement inside the blocks and then pour concrete in.

It makes an extremely durable structure which can withstand extreme impacts and high wind speeds.

Particularly important for us because half the po
