Grabbing, yelling, and chasing them, just hoping to trade for a treat is the old school way of correcting resource guarding. The problem with it is you’re creating more and more tension around the resource. Your dog might not feel comfortable trading a chicken bone for a little treat. It has to be conditioned. You condition it in such a way that initially you are always providing them with a higher value reward than the thing that they are holding. You need to teach the dog that humans coming near a resource doesn’t always mean danger. You need to teach them how to give things up. conditioning the drop it or out cue To have immense value is important first step. Later, we will pressure over top so that if the a huge value to the item that they are holding, they’ll understand that they leave it anyway. Even if the thing that I have for them is less valuable. Interested in working through resource guarding with us? Come to our location in Glyndon, Maryland!
