You eat every 2-3 hours to keep your blood sugar steady. So why won’t the weight move?

Here’s what nobody told you: after 40, the reason most women can’t lose weight is insulin resistance.

I’m 49 and a nutritionist who has specialized in women’s health and hormones for over 20 years. Estrogen is what kept your cells sensitive to insulin. As it drops through perimenopause, you become more insulin resistant, your pancreas pumps out more insulin, and that extra insulin tells your body to store fat, especially around your middle. Same food, same effort, more fat. That’s not willpower. That’s hormones.

Now here’s why the grazing advice backfires. Every time you eat, insulin rises. Eat every 2-3 hours and insulin never comes back down, in a body that’s already struggling to respond to it. You stay on the roller coaster all day: insulin up, crash, hangry, snack, repeat.

When you eat fewer, fuller meals with enough protein, fat, fiber and the right carbs, you can go 4-5 hours without white-knuckling it. That steady stretch is when insulin finally falls and your cells start getting sensitive again. Controlled studies show eating fewer, larger meals lowers your overall glucose load across the day compared to grazing (PMC3374835).

And losing weight is not the same as getting healthier. A calorie deficit burns fat and muscle, and muscle is the tissue that pulls glucose out of your blood. Drop 20 pounds without protecting muscle or managing your blood sugar and you can end up smaller but more insulin resistant. That’s why blood sugar matters most while you’re dieting, not after.

The hangry crash isn’t a sign you need a snack. It’s a sign your blood sugar is unstable and your last meal was too small.

Comment PERI and I’ll send you my perimenopause and blood sugar guide. Good if you’re in menopause too!

Save this for the next time you’re told to eat every 2-3 hours.

Follow for the metabolic science your trainer doesn’t know after 40.
