@Nardwuar asked @Olivia Rodrigo how she discovered @Weyes Blood, and her answer traced back to Weyes Blood’s (Natalie Mering’s) 2019 album cover for ‘Titanic Rising,’ shot entirely underwater.⁠ ⁠ Rodrigo shared that she came across the cover art and was struck immediately, calling it "the most artful, beautiful thing ever," before going back and listening to the record in full. Mering and photographer Brett Stanley built a full childhood bedroom set, complete with furniture, wall posters, and more, then sank and shot it underwater in a Long Beach pool with no digital compositing involved. ⁠ ⁠ Mering and Rodrigo are now friends and collaborators. Weyes Blood joined Rodrigo on backing vocals for a surprise performance of "begged" at a small, phone-free show in LA back in April, then again when Rodrigo brought her out for the song's televised debut while hosting SNL in May.
