This is one of those Arizona history stories a lot of people still don’t know.

Arizona was originally supposed to host the 1993 Super Bowl, but the NFL moved the game to Pasadena after voters rejected a measure to officially recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a paid state holiday.

The backlash was massive, with boycotts, national criticism, and major economic pressure following the decision.

Arizona voters later approved MLK Day in 1992, and the state eventually hosted the Super Bowl in 1996.
