Love when Latinx/LGBTQ+ artists can be highlighted like what becomingchavela recently did that was hosted by studiodelson this past month 🇲🇽 🇨🇷 

Long before conversations about gender expression, authenticity, and living openly became more common, Chavela Vargas was already challenging expectations—simply by being herself.

Born in Costa Rica in 1919, Chavela moved to Mexico as a young woman, where she became one of the most influential voices in ranchera music, a genre traditionally dominated by men.

She broke nearly every rule.

She performed in pants and her signature red poncho instead of dresses. She smoked cigars, drank tequila on stage, and most famously, she sang love songs to women without changing the feminine pronouns in the lyrics—a bold act in the 1940s and 1950s, when gender norms and machismo were deeply ingrained in society.

Although many people within artistic circles knew she was a lesbian, Chavela didn’t publicly speak about her sexuality until she was 81 years old. Looking back on her life, she simply said, “I never hid it.”

After stepping away from music for years while struggling with alcoholism, Chavela made an extraordinary comeback in her seventies, introducing her music to a whole new generation. She later performed around the world, earned some of the highest honors in Latin music, and became a symbol of authenticity, resilience, and artistic freedom.
