What you’re seeing:
American troops landing in Sicily in July 1943 during Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of the island. This was one of the first major steps toward taking the war back into Europe.

Where is this?
Gela, on the southern coast of Sicily. American forces came ashore here and quickly faced heavy counterattacks from Italian and German troops.

Who are these people?
The Americans are part of the US Seventh Army. They were fighting against Italian and German forces defending Sicily, including the Italian Livorno Division and the German Hermann Göring Division near Gela.

What was Operation Mincemeat?
One of the strangest deception plans of World War II. British intelligence used a dead body carrying fake documents to make the Germans think the Allies would attack Sardinia and Corsica instead of Sicily. The deception worked, and helped pull Axis attention away from the real target.
