IBM has unveiled the world’s first sub 1 nanometer (0.7nm) semiconductor research breakthrough, introducing a new 3D Nanostack architecture that stacks transistors vertically to dramatically increase computing density.

The prototype packs approximately 100 billion transistors onto a chip about the size of a fingernail.

According to IBM, the technology could deliver up to 50% higher performance or reduce energy consumption by as much as 70% compared with its previous 2nm research design.

While this is still a research demonstration rather than a commercial processor, it represents an important milestone for the future of AI infrastructure.
