## Caption

On June 23, 1849, the Placer Times newspaper published a story about the average amount of gold panned per person per day on the American River, which was reported to be an ounce to an ounce and a half. The newspaper also reported a miner found a piece of gold that weighed 40 ounces and another person found a piece that weighed 25 pounds, which was taken from the North Fork of the American River. 

Whether these stories were true or if they were fabricated to lure more people to the gold region, it inspired lithographs such as this circa 1850 image from the French periodical “Le Charivari” depicting 6 miners, a horse, and a giant crocodile hauling very large nuggets of gold.

The translation of the French caption reads: “General appearance of California since one finds there larger and larger gold bars.” This cartoon was created by Amedee de Noe and this copy of the lithograph is courtesy of the California State Library.
