5 years ago, Doja Cat released her third studio album ‘Planet Her.’

The record became a global success, spending four non-consecutive weeks at its peak of number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and hitting number one in New Zealand. It made history as the first album by a female rapper to remain in the Billboard 200 top ten for 33 weeks. By the end of 2021, it ranked as the world’s tenth best-selling album of the year and the number-one top-selling R&B album in the United States, moving over 1,510,000 album-equivalent units domestically.

The initial songwriting process began in February 2019 in Hawaii, where Doja Cat wrote half of the album during a vacation following a relationship breakup. The actual tracking sessions took place under COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, split between commercial sound stages and producer Y2K’s home studio. Recording engineer Rian Lewis stated that Doja Cat directed and arranged 100% of her own vocal stacks and harmonies inside the booth. The final tracklist featured executive production from Yeti Beats and Doja Cat, alongside guest vocals from various artists including SZA, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, JID, and Young Thug.

Planet Her launched five successful singles—“Kiss Me More”, “You Right”, “Need to Know”, “Woman”, and “Get into It (Yuh)”—which all charted within the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. Fueled by viral TikTok choreography challenges, tracks like “Woman” and “Get into It (Yuh)” experienced late chart resurgences months after the initial release. The deluxe edition of the record went on to earn Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. Although it broke records as the most-streamed album by a female rapper in Spotify history, Doja Cat later altered her stance on the project in 2023, calling it “mediocre pop” and “a cash grab.”
