I’ve been trying to find the words to speak on the topic of implicit bias because it is something I have been actively working on lately.
.
Most of us, yes even women in stem, unconsciously associate science with men. Oftentimes if I’m reading a research paper or glance at the cover of a scientific book I will be surprised to see a woman’s name as the author. My next thought will be that I, as an advocate for women in stem, still battle these biases day to day within myself.
.
So if I, who actively work to tear these stereotypes down, experiences these unconscious biases, then they must exist in the minds of millions of scientists in these fields as well (male or female). So how do we battle this; a life’s worth of learned biases? Studies have shown that for men and women who believe these implicit biases shouldn’t be a barrier, mere acknowledgement of their existence will allow them to start counteracting them.

Therefore, although it’s not a solution for the reason they are there to begin with, it starts with ourselves to say enough is enough.
