BMW once made an ad about the Mercedes CEO retiring, and on the surface it looks ordinary… but it's secretly brilliant.
Not because it's packed with BMW logos or big action shots.
It works because it completely flips what viewers expect.
The ad starts off feeling like a Mercedes commercial.
It honors the retirement of legendary Mercedes CEO Dieter Zetsche, showing him leaving headquarters for the last time.
Employees wave, people applaud, and the whole thing feels emotional and respectful.
Then comes the twist.
He gets home, opens his garage…
and he's driving a BMW i8 Roadster.
That one reveal does everything.
BMW honors their rival while subtly suggesting that even Mercedes' own CEO would pick a BMW when no one's watching.
They even closed with:
"Retirement is about exploring your wide open future,"
and a thank-you to Mercedes for "so many years of inspiring competition."
The timing was perfect too.
The ad dropped right as Zetsche actually retired, and people loved it.
It pulled in more than 8.5 million views on YouTube alone.
The takeaway:
Flipping expectations is one of the strongest tools in advertising.
When you set up a belief and subvert it with something even better, you create a moment people remember and want to share.
BMW proved that being clever with your creative will never go out of style.
