Hear those clicks? That’s the sound of a sperm whale conversation, and at 230 decibels, it’s the loudest biologically-made sound on Earth

Sperm whales are also the largest toothed predators in the world, reaching sixty feet long and fifty tons. They can dive over a mile below the surface, into crushing darkness, to hunt giant squid. They are also incredibly social and have an intelligence that could rival our own.

Researchers at ProjectCETI have been working to decode their clicks, called “codas,” and have uncovered a complex language with a vocabulary of hundreds of words. Language is considered one of the clearest signs of intelligence, and until now, we’d never seen anything like it outside of humans.

Learn more about how ProjectCETI is decoding sperm whale language in PaulNicklen’s latest essay with KatieCouricMedia. Sign up for Ripple Effect to get it sent to your inbox tomorrow — link in bio!
