Today, we are crowning soccer referee Brooke Mayo as our #QueenoftheWeek 👑

Born in Garland, Texas, Mayo found a passion for soccer at a young age. She began playing when she was four years old and joined competitive leagues when she turned thirteen. Around the same time, Mayo also took an interest in refereeing. Throughout high school, she would alternate between playing and refereeing. She later earned an athletic scholarship to Tennessee Tech University, where she joined the Golden Eagles soccer team while continuing to referee and assist with coaching. 

After graduation, Mayo pursued a career as an assistant referee. She spent two years officiating in the National Women’s Soccer League before earning her FIFA badge in 2018. She also began overseeing games at Major Soccer League in 2020. Throughout her career, Mayo’s been appointed to numerous international championships, and in 2023, she was chosen for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand where she served on the officiating trip in the final between Spain and England. 

Now, she’s making history at this year’s FIFA World Cup. Appointed as an assistant referee, Mayo is the first openly gay match official at a men’s World Cup. She is also part of the first all-American, all-female officiating crew at any men’s World Cup tournament. Mayo has shared that with this role, she hopes to inspire young girls and beyond to remain confident in themselves and their dreams even in the face of negativity from others. She pushes for inclusive spaces for all and hopes to remind those that haven’t seen themselves represented that they belong.
