Stephen Eustáquio has endured immense heartbreak over the past two years. In April 2023, he lost his mother, Esmeralda, after her battle with brain cancer. Just over a year later, in May 2024, his father, Armando, tragically passed away from a heart attack.

Despite those unimaginable losses, Eustáquio continued to lead Canada with resilience and determination. Today, he scored the historic goal that sent Canada to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time ever, creating one of the greatest moments in Canadian soccer history.

After the match, Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch said Eustáquio’s late parents were “looking down” on him during the unforgettable moment.

Congratulations, Stephen. A goal, and a moment, that Canada will never forget. ❤️🇨🇦⚽
