On April 1st I was 38 weeks 5 days with twins sharing a placenta and it was time to begin a homeopathic induction. My birth team arrived around noon. Me and the boys were checked and I drank the first of what would be more than one castor oil smoothie. 

Neighborhood curb walks. Stair walking. A yoga ball. The toilet. Nearly two hours of early labor but still no contractions.

Another smoothie. More walking. More body work. More waiting.

A membrane sweep brought stronger but still irregular contractions. An hour later, we pulled the last trick in the book: breaking my water. I was finally in labor.

I labored in the bathroom. In doorways. On my knees. Finally on my bed. The room went quiet except for my midwife’s voice, soft and steady, telling me I was ready.

Benny was born OP at 10:01pm. 7 lbs 2 oz.

I had relief. Joy. And the immediate awareness that I wasn’t done. I still had to meet his brother. I thought I’d have time to regroup. I should have known better with a name like Dash.

Less than 90 seconds after Benny was born, I felt the urge to push again. Dash’s foot was already crowning inside his bag of waters.

Brit cut Benny’s cord and put him on her chest. My brother and my dad flipped me onto my knees so gravity could help me push this breech baby into the world.

It took 17 minutes to deliver Dash. It was, without question, the hardest delivery I’ve ever had. I couldn’t feel my contractions anymore. I was exhausted. It took everything I had to consciously will my body to push when it no longer knew how to tell me to.

911 was called — standard protocol for every breech birth my OB and midwife attends, just to have a backup medical team within reach.

Dash was born at 10:20pm. Breech and en caul (happens in less than 1 in 80k births). 6 lbs 4 oz. He needed oxygen, warmth, and firm rubbing to take his first breath.

We made it. Our family of 7 was complete. Both boys born at home, healthy and strong, surrounded by grandparents, godmother, siblings, aunties, and uncles.

3 months later, I still can’t fully comprehend those 19 minutes between them.
