11 years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled that our marriage was legal in every state in the country.

We’d already planned our engagement party before that ruling came down. Invitations were out. We were getting married regardless of what the Court decided that day. This wasn’t the reason we got married but it was the biggest cherry on top of a decision we’d already made.

People showed up to our party in tears that week. Something that had felt uncertain just days before was suddenly, undeniably real.

11 years later: we’re two moms with five kids, a whole life legally protected because of that ruling — both our names on birth certificates, shared insurance, every legal thread that holds a family together.

Marriage equality is still the law of the land. But it’s not as settled as people assume. Support is falling in parts of the political spectrum, and there are active legal efforts right now aimed at getting a direct challenge back to the Supreme Court.

That’s why visibility still matters. Not as a celebration of something finished. As a reminder to keep showing up.
