11 years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage was legal in every state in this country.

Here’s what most people don’t know: we had already planned our engagement party. The invitations were out. The plans were made. We were getting married regardless of what the Court decided that day.

This ruling wasn’t the reason we got married. It was the biggest cherry on top of a decision we’d already made.

I remember people showing up to our party in tears. Genuine, overwhelmed, joyful tears because something that had felt uncertain just days before was now, suddenly, undeniably real. Our marriage wasn’t a hypothetical anymore. It was protected. Recognized. The same, in the eyes of the law, as anyone else’s.

11 years later, we have five kids. A whole life built on top of that protection — taxes filed together, both our names on birth certificates, health insurance, hospital visitation rights, every single legal thread that holds a family together.

I want to be honest about something on this anniversary, though. Marriage equality is still the law of the land. It has not been overturned. But it is not as settled as a lot of people assume. 

Support has been falling specifically within parts of the political spectrum, and there are active, organized legal efforts right now aimed at getting a direct challenge back in front of the Supreme Court. This isn’t fear-mongering. It’s just true.

That’s why Pride Month still matters. Not as a celebration of something finished, but as a reminder that rights that took decades to win can still be challenged, and visibility is part of how we protect them.

So today, happy 11 years to marriage equality. Happy 11 years to us choosing each other in front of everyone we love, fully protected by the law of this country. And happy 11 years to continuing to show up, loudly, for the people still fighting for what we already have. 🏳️‍🌈🤍
