The news used to be different.

People disagreed, sometimes passionately, but the goal was still to help the public learn and better understand the world and the viewpoints around them. Just look at Rachel Maddow and Tucker Carlson playfully joking with one another from across the aisle while still discussing the issues at hand.

Today, too much of our media ecosystem prioritizes hate, division, outrage, and ratings. As consumers, we have a role to play. Every click, share, comment, and forward sends a signal about the kind of content we want more of. If we stop rewarding division and start elevating content that informs, educates, and brings people together, we can help change the incentives driving so much of what we see today.

We can change the news by being thoughtful of what we choose to reward.
