Forty years, and one extraordinary ambassador 👑

Today, your Toronto Zoo is celebrating a truly remarkable milestone as King Lloyd, our beloved white-headed vulture, turns 40 years old 🪶

Reaching this age is an exceptional achievement for a species like his, and we are incredibly honoured to provide Lloyd with the world-class care that has helped him thrive for four decades.

Lloyd is one of only two white-headed vultures living in accredited zoos across North America, making him a truly rare ambassador for his species. While many guests know him for his regal personality (and those unmistakable pantaloons!), every visit with Lloyd is also an opportunity to learn about one of Africa's most threatened birds.

In the wild, white-headed vultures have experienced a population decline of more than 90% over the past 50 years, with only an estimated 5,500 individuals remaining. Habitat loss, poisoning, and diminishing food sources continue to threaten their survival.

As Guardians of Wild, we're proud to care for ambassadors like Lloyd who help inspire action for wildlife far beyond our Zoo's gates. Vultures are nature's cleanup crew, playing a vital role in keeping ecosystems healthy by consuming carcasses, reducing the spread of disease, and serving as important indicators of environmental health.

If you're visiting the African Savanna this summer, be sure to wish His Majesty a very happy 40th birthday.

Here's to an incredible bird, an extraordinary life, and many more opportunities to inspire conservation for his wild counterparts 🖤🎂 #GuardiansofWild
