Her name was Savanna Jones. She was a freshman at Wilberforce University. She texted her friends before that night and told them she was "lowkey scared." She did not make it home.

According to a lawsuit filed by her family, Jones died on April 29 after participating in a hazing ritual called "Turtle crossing" run by an underground campus drinking club. She became visibly unconscious and was carried back to her dorm. No resident assistant, campus safety officer, or residence life employee intervened. 

The lawsuit names Wilberforce's own director of housing and residence life as a defendant, alleging he participated in and encouraged the fatal ritual. The Turtles club was allegedly known across campus, with resident assistants and band members among its participants. 

"Had Wilberforce actively enforced its policies and reasonably supervised its residential spaces, Savanna Jones would never have died," the family's complaint states.
