📍Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to about 19 species of fireflies. Among them, the synchronous fireflies (Photinus carolinus) are one of the few species with the ability to synchronize their flashing patterns.

Fireflies produce light through bioluminescence. This occurs when chemicals such as luciferin mix with oxygen and the enzyme luciferase to produce the glow in their abdomens that we all know and love. 🎇
