England, 1645. Matthew Hopkins called himself the Witchfinder General — Parliament never gave him that title. He invented it. Paid per conviction, he kept women awake for days until they confessed. On one day alone, 18 people were hanged at Bury St Edmunds — 16 of them women. In three years, he sent more to the gallows than all English witch-hunters of the previous century combined. He died at home, aged 27, of tuberculosis. Untried. Unpunished.
