She was not a monster.

She was poor.

In Bideford, Devon, in 1682, Temperance Lloyd, Mary Trembles and Susanna Edwards were accused of witchcraft.

They were women with little power, little protection, and a town ready to believe the worst.

Much of the case was built on fear, suspicion and accusation — but the court still called it justice.

On 25 August 1682, all three were hanged.

They are remembered as the last women executed for witchcraft in England.
